I'm entering my 14th year in the classroom, my 8th at Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School (OGPS), a Boston Public School that serves over 900 students, with over 90% of them qualifying for free and reduced lunch. In 2010, OGPS was designated a turnaround school because of its historically poor student achievement and high staff turnover. For many of our students, access to quality public education and to college success represents a pathway out of poverty and to greater opportunities. Many of our students will be the first in their families to earn college degrees. A huge part of my work entails fostering and nurturing a love of reading. Many of our students are struggling readers. One of my goals, every year, is to expose students to engaging literature that invites meaningful dialogue, encourages them to enjoy reading for its own sake and become lifelong readers. Thank you for supporting my work. ~Belzie
