My students attend a small charter school in Baltimore City. Many of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and come from a wide range of academic backgrounds. The readers are there, but many more start high school with an aversion to books. A large percentage of our 9th graders are reading below grade level, and as a result, get frustrated and lack motivation in the classroom, especially when it is time to read and write. I know that this can be changed and that even the most reluctant reader can find pleasure and meaning in a book.
