Growing up what characters did you fall in love with? Did those characters mirror your own life or the life of someone else? Up to this point in my students' lives, they've read book series like Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, and Henry and Mudge, however, the characters in those books don't reflect the diversity of their own lives. This project would put books into the hands of my students that have characters that represent a multitude of backgrounds and cultures. In order for students to latch on to a book, they need to find characters that mirror their own backgrounds and experiences. Every student should be able to see themselves in a book. This project will encourage their love of reading and their ability to see themselves as a reader. Not only will my students be able to see themselves in a book, but they will also have the opportunity to look into the world of someone else, developing an acceptance of others and an appreciation for diversity, so desperately needed for their success as a contributing member of our community.
