The books used in this project, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Into the Wild, will be used to expose students to new ways of thinking about themselves in the world they live in and provide them with books that they will be able to read and engage with through direct annotation. This year our school has taken up the challenge of offering advanced placement classes to over 55% of our students. Many of our students come from low- income, working class families and enter the school with low reading and math scores. We have chosen to offer AP courses to our students because we know our students need to be challenged in order to compete academically and in the corporate world. The AP curriculum begs students to think critically about what they are learning. Particularly in the AP Language and Composition course, students are removed from passively retaining information. They have to take the information they have learned and think about the why's and how it's used. We have been most adventurous in the AP Language and Composition course. Studies have found that students who engage with texts kinesthetically are increasingly able to grasp the more abstract concepts authors embed in the text. Many of my students have not had the opportunity to own books past elementary education. Providing each student with their own book will allow them to experience reading in a more tangible manner. The joy of having students make direct notes in a book further enforces that they are having a constant dialogue with the writer that is not only subconscious but also happening on the page right in front of them. Please help me on this journey towards making reading real for students.
