Our curriculum comes alive when we integrate art with what we are studying in the classroom! With each unit of study in second grade, we try to introduce and incorporate an artist to study. For example, as part of our Biodiversity/Farm to Table unit, we study artists who are known for painting cows! The children love to recreate their own renditions of cow artwork and learn to use various art mediums to create their masterpieces. They are all so proud of their artwork and all become just a bit obsessed with the animal. Students internalize the content and learn to appreciate the art that is applied to what they are studying. We have six units of study for second grade and we are running out of art supplies. For each unit, not only do we focus on artist but also on the type of medium that the artists use when creating their art. For our U.S. Government unit, we examine the artist Peter Maxx and his use of primary colors. Students use oil pastels to create their own Americana works of art. In other units, we transition into Impressionism and the use of water colors. For our unit on Solids and Liquids, we learn and explore with mixing colors and the use acrylic paints. Students also learn how to use different size brushes when painting and how to properly take care of their materials. Our classroom comes alive with colorful pieces of content and art from the children, and I love to display their masterpieces for everyone to see.
