In most instructional settings, kids today have very little choice. They are told what to learn, how they are going to learn it, where they are going to sit, and when they are allowed to get up. However, research shows that giving some of that decision-making back to kids empowers them and teaches them how to make responsible choices. We need a table and chairs, balance disks and seat cushions for alternative seating options to help them find a spot that enhances their focus and encourages responsible decision-making. These new seating options will allow my students to have more power and ownership in their learning. Having various types of seating options, such as floor seating to taller tables and stools, will meet the needs of many different types of learners.
