The 250 binders will enable our 250 sophomores to begin their school year with an effective organizational system. Our students are effective in taking Cornell notes, but need a place to store them by subject and chronologically. Two AVID 10 courses will also use the binders, and the students in those classes will serve as models and assistants for other students to follow. When students come to class organized, their thinking is more ordered, and higher-level learning can occur. In addition, handouts can be interspersed with these notes so students can often revisit and revise their thinking as it pertains to their classes. I've witnessed students making the shift from always losing handouts and homework to being empowered to care for their own work with just the simple addition of a binder (plus a little guidance on how to use it effectively, of course!). Students are able to maintain agendas, homework logs, and a list of study buddies to contact in the event of an absence- all ways to foster independence and life-long organizational skills.
