I am teaching a new subject this year and have acquired "left over," out-dated books from a previous teacher. I would like to dramatically expand my classroom library to include age-appropriate, high-interest texts that are accessible to my students. These texts will be used for independent reading and literature circles. My wishlist includes fiction text written at 3rd and 4th grade levels, but for a young adult. For my 9th graders, I have selected texts that correspond with the Read 180 reading program so that students will be able to earn points for taking a quiz after they've completed their texts. These students enjoy getting points to earn prizes throughout the year, symbolizing their growth. I also included a subscription to a news magazine written for struggling readers. Some of my students use audio technology in other classes, but in my class my goal is to help them continue to develop their independent reading levels. Having current and varied materials at their actual reading levels will be a motivator for my students.
