Let's face it, school food is rarely good. It is not any better here at our school. After nearly two years of teaching here I recognize that the greatest barrier to helping my kids build stamina and focus in the classroom is their hunger. Because hunger agitates already fragile behavioral situations and creates countless other issues, helping to ease hunger pains goes a long way to calming my students enough to get real work done on a daily basis. I buy a lot of food out of my own pocket for my kids, but so much more needs to happen. I originally used snacks as an incentive for exceptional work or behavior in class, but quickly realized that almost all of my students were nearing "hangry" status! And this began 1st hour, immediately following breakfast. These snacks will be the gateway to the potential of my students. Just as the old adage says, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach," so I have discovered that the way to my kids' minds is through theirs.
