It is very important for children to learn how to socialize and to get along with others. This starts in a kindergarten classroom and more specifically in a housekeeping center. With the food playsets and furniture, the children will prepare meals for each other, take care of babies, make shopping lists, while talking around the kitchen table, and pretend to be a grown up. The children can learn about healthy food options while preparing a meal and serving it on dishes for a sit down meal.
Playing reduces tension because children don't have to worry about expectations. There is no pressure. Learning centers allow children to role play in order to understand and make sense of the real world and their personal experiences in it.
People in a community share common interests and activities. Children in kindergarten come to the classroom from many different backgrounds and with a wide range of experiences. By creating a community of learners in the classroom, teach- ers establish common ground among all the children.
