One area, my students struggle the most with is listening and reading comprehension. Having taught struggling readers for many years, I know first hand how nerve wracking it is to try to overcome the embarrassment of learning to read in high school. I'm requesting 1 Listening Center with 6 headphones,a listening center table with chairs, and 1 small group, guided reading practice table with chairs so that I can set up small group rotations during reading intervention class. At the listening center, students will be able to listen and track books above their independent reading level to develop their vocabulary, background knowledge and comprehension. In my classroom, we practice reading and writing daily using students-based reading centers that include all the learning modalities. The addition of technology and center-specific tables would provide my students a much needed appropriate and learning-conducive classroom environment. This should support a speedy and focused learning of reading to help my students face the challenges of higher education and the workplace.
