Students are frequently exposed to traditional literature through textbooks and novels that have sat on our school shelves for the last 30 years. Most of them have never read a story where they saw themselves represented in the main characters or saw their own experiences being told through literature. Our goal is to expose our students to different genres of literature and new cultural perspectives. As the world becomes more interconnected, we want to provide our students with a more enriching and diverse literary foundation. American Born Chinese, a graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, offers students a unique cultural perspective through a creative medium that is accessible to all types of readers. We have an inclusive classroom that is represented by multiple cultures; this particular story and literary medium helps break down many learning barriers our students face. The graphic novel encompasses three exciting and relatable stories and includes visuals that are engaging for students. Students will love reading this graphic novel while also exploring major themes of racial struggles and stereotypes, growing up and understanding one's identity, and being a part of the complex web of American culture.
