Flexible seating allows students to make the choices that work best for them. They choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students work at tables with a standard chair. This set up is not working for them, they struggle to keep the chair on the floor and need a way to get small movement. This would allow them to have options that work for them, so they can stay focused on content and help close learning gaps. Items like the ball chairs, fidget bands, and stools. Helping students manage their own needs by choosing what they need for that class. Having different options allows me to meet their various needs. Sensory items help students regulate their behavior and meet their needs before they have a meltdown. Several different things are needed because, students may need something different from day to day to calm them. Students would be taught to identify their needs and ask for what they need before they become overwhelmed. This would allow them to regulate their own behavior and focus on instruction so they can hopefully develop enough skill to be in general education classes. The math manipulatives will help students develop core math skills needed to go back into a general education classroom. SPED students need to be able to have frequent practice and repetition with teacher guidance. Using the whiteboards and manipulatives in lessons would allow that to happen. The folders are so students can quickly get progress monitoring materials. Students would go to a marked folder get their practice sheet and answer key and they check their work. Ultimately, these materials would help my students develop skills to work towards being in a general education classroom.
