In order for society to continue moving forward, our children need to have a strong mathematical foundation. In my class students build that foundation by learning concrete skills. The use of a two colored abacus helps them visualize anchors to 5 and 10. Once these skill are in place they will be able to move to abstract concepts. Students need to be taught the essential skills to be successful in the 21st century. In my classroom, I strive to teach 21st century skills by focusing on the 4 C's; Critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. The STEM items will help my students develop these skill and ensure a bright future. The Wonder Workshop Dash & Dot Robot will help my students be inspired to learn coding and problem solving skills. Legos will help my students develop spatial and proportional awareness, Collaborate with others to solve problems, and allow for creativity and innovation. The STEM Science Station - Magnets and the Billy Goats Gruff problems solving kits will allow me to have enough materials in my classroom to set up STEM Centers and motivate students with various interests. Children learn in a variety of ways. I intend to use the drumsticks to help students who excel with kinesthetic learning. Drumsticks are extremely helpful to develop counting patterns, place value, and addition and subtraction skills. For example, students can learn counting by fives by "tapping" the first four numbers and then saying the 5th number as they tap the drumsticks together. When students are given drumsticks they are 100% engaged in the lesson for a longer period of time. Thank you for helping our children learn and grow with STEM.
