My goal in my ESL classroom is to improve students' knowledge and understanding of the English language so that they are able to succeed in their core content areas. I try to choose high interest books and readings that students will enjoy. Last year I experimented with using a graphic novel in one of my classes, and it was a huge success! Graphic novels expose students to complex material in a readable format. The pictures and artwork accompanying the texts help my ESL students to comprehend what they are reading. Graphic novels engage even the most reluctant readers. This year I hope to read more graphic novels with my students, including Beowulf and The Odyssey, but we need help with the cost of the books.
