Our local police department chaplain often comforts children after they have experienced some sort tragedy or trauma. When he can he gives them small trinkets or toys to comfort them and give them something to play with while they wait for the situation to resolve. He can often get teddy bears but for many children the teddy bears seemed babyish. He approached my students about designing and printing toys that he can give out when he encounters kids. Not only will it comfort children, but it is a great way to spread awareness and goodwill for the entire police department. My students have the design expertise to create amazing toys, however the lack the 3d printer and filament to make their designs a reality. We're asking for a 3d printer, and enough filament to get us started. Once we have the printer the students will create 3d models of small toys and then, using the 3d printer, we will make their designs a reality. Once we have the printed toys we will give them to the police chaplain we've partnered with so he can distribute them when the need arises. My students will not only learn 3d modeling and problem solving skills but they will be making a difference in their community!
