In our class, we spend 20 minutes each day doing sustained silent reading (SSR) in order to support reading skills. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and our school has over 54 languages spoken. Due to the large diversity of language, my students need books that are at a variety of skill levels, such as the Bluford Series or The Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. The books I have chosen will help each student build their own reading skills, and move to challenge themselves. Our school is culturally diverse, with only 40% of the student population identifying as white. Multicultural and international books such as The Bamboo People or One Good Story, That One will help my students build interest in reading and find books that connect to their own cultures and values. I chose a wide variety of genres in order to engage and interest all readers. Lastly, the basic supplies such as markers, pencils, glue, and scissors will be used in their interactive journals, where students are asked to respond to the books they're reading during SSR. Students will individually journal and free write about their reading experiences as well as have discussions with other students about the readings that have impacted them. The large Post-It papers will help with journal mapping or presentations. These supplies will help create vibrant, engaging journals and discussions that can further interest my students in reading.
