This book will provide a rich, reading experience for all of the students in my classroom. It is written in verse, so the genre is new to many students and increases their exposure to different types of texts. Having enough books so each student can take one home is an important aspect of my class, as students often complete pre-reading and annotation before class to make the most of our time for discussion and writing during class. My students love this format for completing a class novel, and it enhances our identity as a scholarly community. Furthermore, the story Inside Out and Back Again touches on many themes that my students can relate to experiencing challenges in school, moving, learning English, and trying to support family members. The skillful, artistic writing combined with relatable topics make it an ideal book for students to read as part of our poetry unit. My students love to use books as a springboard to talk about tough topics or tell their personal stories, and this book would lend itself well to this type of discussion.
