Imagine a 5th grader who starts a year with below grade level reading. He gets literacy intervention all year in a small group setting, reading non-fiction and fiction books. He learns to talk about books and realizes that authors write books for a specific purpose. He learns to show evidence from the books to support his opinions and ideas. At the end of the year, he passes the end of the grade level bench mark with confidence and is ready for middle school. These are the students I teach as a K-5 Literacy Intervention Teacher. They need small group intervention in reading and writing to be able to reach the end of the grade level bench mark.
