My first graders are very unique and special, but all of them have the same desire...to learn to read! Some of my students are learning English, but all will benefit greatly from hearing quality literature. My students will be so excited to have portable cd players. They can listen independently to a book of their choosing. Then they can write about the book on a reading response sheet. They absolutely love stories about animals (non-fiction) and can write about what they learned. Fiction for fun stories enable them to identify the elements of a story (characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end, problem, and solution) Research shows that students need to listen to quality reading daily to increase their fluency and to build their comprehension skills.
