In order to understand dense and complex texts, previous knowledge is necessary! My students desire to read and understand the dense texts that are required to understand the momentous events from history. The best way to do this is to build knowledge in books that offer images, altered vocabulary or another perspective in order to make these primary sources easier to understand and connect to. Reading books like You wouldn't want to sail with Columbus will make his voyages more interesting as well as create a bank of knowledge to access when reading denser texts. With fictional books like the young royals series, the experiences of the royals during the middle ages will be both more interesting and more real. Ultimately, the more reading my students are doing, the better their English skills will be, resulting in the desire to read even more.
