Positive peer interactions are difficult for so many of our students with autism and ADHD. Add a loud and chaotic environment to the mix and positive interactions decline significantly. I am requesting acoustic tiles that we can place in our school cafeteria to reduce the noise levels and make it a more comfortable place for our autistic and ADHD students, as well as our typical students. Lunch time is a time when students can interact more freely with peers during their school day. Unfortunately, the loud, echoing noise of our large cafeteria makes it a very unpleasant place for many of our students, so much so that many request not to eat lunch in the cafeteria and choose to isolate themselves so as to avoid the sensory overload. This reduces their opportunities to interact with their peers and create friendships. I would like to make our cafeteria a positive, pleasant place that students enjoy being in.
