Teaching students who have autism means having a classroom that is very non traditional. My classroom focuses a lot on being very sensory oriented, calm, and full of technology to ensure my students have everything to meet their educational, communicational and sensory needs. I would never change my students for the world, but its my job to change the world for them. Having worked at a center for students who have autism before we really utilized the use of iPads and came across an amazing product called Osmo which uses technology and educational games to teach spelling, math, handwriting, and even art! For many of my kids who come from nothing, I want to be able to give my students access to EVERYTHING they need to change their lives and help them grow into the adults I know they can be. My students intense sensory needs require us to participate in calming yoga on a daily basis and incorporate a total of 60 minutes of sensory breaks throughout our day. My classroom currently has a swing in the center of the room that my kids absolutely love and a sensory corner that needs more supplies such as a weighted blanket, yoga ball, and bubbles! Being able to support my students intense sensory needs will decrease sensory induced behaviors and they can focus more attention on their education. These kids deserve the world plus more and I will do everything I can to help them succeed and live the fullest life possible.
