My students are 10 and 11 years old. They are predominantly from immigrant families from Mexico, Bangladesh, China and Eastern Europe. They attend a public school in New York City. Many are second language learners and many have parents who do not speak English. A few of my students are newcomers to this country. They need to develop content-specific, academic vocabulary and be involved in "hands-on" experiences to help them become fluent readers and writers of English. They are very curious and excited when they are involved in scientific learning.
