After getting past basic operations, we will be using calculators to help students manage more difficult steps in solving math problems. For example, we will study how to calculate tax and tip on a restaurant bill. I will be looking to see if students know the steps to find the tax and add it to the bill. The use of a calculator will expedite this process and (hopefully) ease frustrations. As we get into geometric shapes, many students will find it helpful to hold the shape in their hand instead of simply talk about it or even look at a picture. We spend considerable amount of time discussing surface area and volume of solids, so these physical representations are a great visual. Stopwatches will be used as students time each other to find patterns in rates and ratios. Lastly, we will use decks of cards to talk about statistics and probability. Students will follow an inquiry-based lesson to predict whether or not the next card will be red or black. The lesson continues to predicting the suit and finally the card number. All these supplies will enhance student learning by equipping them to solve problems in real-world situations.
