When creating graphic organizers, presenting visuals (which are very helpful especially for my EL students), or presenting a new lesson, I usually ask students to meet me on the carpet. Students are constantly telling me: "I don't have enough room" or "I'm squished!" My students have only attend school for 6 weeks, thus they are still fairly new to first grade. My students still need carpet time just like kindergarten students. They need the carpet to help them determine the space designated to them and how to share the carpet with other students around them. This will also help them build spatial awareness.
