The classroom environment and materials should be inviting and welcome student learning. In first grade, students start their day with morning meeting. A meeting rug is essential to this. Think about when you were in school. The carpet was where you greeted each other, shared stories, contributed ideas, learned to listen to other, became leaders, and so much more. My dreadful classroom floor is in need of a carpet to bring the spark to my students learning. First grade is also the year when students are learning to read and comprehend, the audio tapes will help with their reading development.
