My students are being introduced to a new curriculum this year. While I have taught this curriculum in the past, it will break their typical learning paradigm from previous grades. The books on this list will go toward ensuring that all students have an opportunity to learn in their comfort zone as much as possible. They will provide for not just this year's students, but will be kept in the classroom for future students as well. Part of a successful English Language Curriculum is providing background knowledge to ensure that the students are familiar with the subject matter and don't get lost in the large details of the subject. For example, when learning about the American Revolution, if students don't know who the Americans were fighting against and why from previous cultural context, they are at a huge disadvantage when trying to synthesize the knowledge from the main lesson. Providing these supplementary texts that can be used during times of independent learning that expose the material in a different way (such as a graphic novel versus a full text book) make an impactful difference.
