The girls in my after school coding club are curious and excited to learn more about coding and computer science. Many come from low-income households and they don’t have opportunities at home to hear about and explore careers in that field. We need Hummingbird robotics kits so the girls can learn computational thinking through hands-on projects that help them see how computers can help solve real-world problems. Working in small groups, they will have fun coding, building and solving design challenges using Scratch block programming to control the Hummingbird's lights, motors, and sensors. Whether designing miniature amusement park rides or creating assistive technology to help someone with a disability function more independently, the girls will be learning how computers shape our world and how they can shape the future. Other students at Cele will have access to the kits through our MakerSpace programs where they can become creators instead of just consumers of technology and perhaps discover a passion that becomes a career.
