Our class Literacy Lab will help students learn by taking a scientific approach to dissecting words and literature to help improve overall reading application and comprehension. By changing from traditional desks to these requested tables, the students can work together and gain confidence by being part of a team! Just think of your high school science class and how you teamed up with a partner or group at tables. This will be applied in my first grade classroom by having students at tables for whole group reading lessons. They then will be able to rotate and break up into small groups to work on specific skills. Each table will have different activities that "break down" reading so that children can master decoding skills, like "chunking", vowel patterns, word families, and more. Tables will add to the flexible seating options I have already incorporated in my classroom. By giving students more choices, they discover what works best for them, which in turn improves their overall engagement in learning.
