Students are already loving the hands on learning experiences and I am loving the chance to use some of what I learned in my math PD. \r\n\r\nThe vocabulary activity has been super valuable for supporting student understanding using the file folders. Shapes are one of the things we introduce in more depth in first grade and students will build on this learning for the rest of their school careers. The dice and other hands on manipulatives have been a huge hit with my students. It has allowed me to have students practice counting to 100, addition/subtraction, shapes, special awareness and in depth problem solving. \r\n\r\nThe impact on math scores since I started incorporating the learning from my math PD has been huge! This project has made such a huge impact on my room in a very short period of time already. With the addition of new early reader titles I have more students than ever practicing their reading skills in the context of books and building their confidence as readers. \r\n\r\nWe use AR in my building as a way to support student literacy and build a love and joy for reading across grade levels. First grade is often the first time many of my students have been introduced to AR testing and they love getting to work toward their goals. Since adding the selection of early reader books to my classroom library I have had almost half of my class meet or exceed their AR goals for the six weeks. I have also seen my stronger readers become confident enough to read to my emerging readers as a partner to help them achieve their own goals without needing me to read books to them each time. \r\n\r\nWhile I love reading to my students it is a challenge to read books to 20 individual children each day with varying interests. I have enjoyed watching my students fall in love with certain characters and genres of books and realize that they can access books for the first time without needing an adult. What a treasure this is! Without your support it would have been a much longer road to have the selection of early reader books I now have. We spent weeks in the library learning about skyscrapers and many of the engineering concepts to takes to build a building that 'scrapes the sky.' We did a virtual tour of the Empire State Building and found the top ten tallest structures in the world. I only had a few books related to skyscrapers before this project and the students were always asking for more. Being able to provide additional titles let more students check out a book related to what were learning.\r\n\r\nTo finish this unit off, we had a competition to see which group could build the tallest free-standing structure. It was a fierce competition. This year, I was able to give each group the exact same materials which made the competition equal for all groups. I noticed that many of my students struggled to stay focused, remained fidgety throughout lessons, and seemed uncomfortable during extended periods of instruction. I realized that one-size-fits-all seating wasn't meeting the diverse needs of my learners- some needed to move, others needed a quiet corner, and many simply needed options. Thanks to DonorsChoose donors, I was able to add flexible seating options to my classroom alongside our traditional desks. We now have wobble cushions and stability balls for students who need movement to focus. While we still maintain traditional seating for those that need more structure and consistency, the flexible options give students meaningful choices throughout the day.\r\nThe results have been genuinely positive. Students now have alternatives when they need them most, and I've noticed improved focus during independent work and small group instruction. The students who benefit most from movement—my kinesthetic learners—have more tools to support their learning style. They're more engaged when they have a choice in where and how they work.\r\nThe classroom feels more welcoming and dynamic with the variety of spaces. Small groups naturally gravitate toward collaborative seating, and students seem more comfortable during lessons. Yes, students are still students; they're still fidgety, still testing boundaries, and still finding creative ways to be silly, but I've noticed that when they have appropriate outlets for movement and choice, behavioral issues are fewer and farther between.\r\nThe variety of seating arrangements has also given us more flexibility for different types of learning. When we do partner work or small group activities, having options means I can better match students to spaces that will help them succeed. Students have also become more aware of what helps them focus. Some have learned that they do better with movement, while others have discovered they prefer a quieter, more traditional setup. This self-awareness is valuable.","fullyFundedDate":1766168326372,"projectUrl":"project/creating-calm-flexible-seating-for-bett/9875741/","projectTitle":"Creating Calm: Flexible Seating for Better Focus and Mental Health","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lyons","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9117998_orig.jpg?crop=360,360,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729288500270","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9117998"},{"teacherId":8383784,"projectId":10028013,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting my classroom's snack needs throughout this school year. Some supplies just get used daily and these are among the most popular in my classroom. Students have been able to practice their spelling words more effectively thanks to having access to new dry erase markers to use on our dry erase boards.
