Using wiggle seats and sensory materials will create an environment where my students will get out their energy in an effective way, allowing them to engage in the lesson. I work with many students across multiple grade-levels who will be able to access this innovative way of learning. As a special educator, my office serves as a multi-purpose room, providing direct academic instruction, giving students a safe place to take a break, and working with students in small groups to reinforce skills. All children, no matter the age, require movement. My students have expressed their desire to move around the classroom and give their body the attention it needs. They voice how it is difficult to sit still all day and would love the opportunity to move while they learn. They have asked for fidgets like putty, linking cubes, and the tangle jr. to keep their hands active. The stability ball and wiggle seats will help them keep their bodies active as well. My classroom will give them the opportunity to choose what works best for them and their bodies. Flexible seating and fidgets allow students to do this successfully and appropriately, while still accessing material and feeling confident!
