As an English language teacher, I have the privilege of working with students from many parts of globe. All of my students have lived in a country other than the United States at some point and, as a result, bring with them a wealth of cultural, academic, and linguistic knowledge. However, because their families have immigrated to the US from other countries, many of them don't have much in the way of family artifacts. Your generous donation will allow my students to document their personal immigration stories through embroidery, thereby providing each of them with a tangible artifact that they can pass on to the next generation. As part of this unit, my students will be researching their family histories and immigration experiences. The academic standards associated with research are critical in middle school and present frequent opportunities for the traditional domains of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking. However, in addition to the traditional academic activities, my students will also document their research via the nontraditional media of embroidery. Using the style of textile artist Jakkai Siributr as inspiration, students will chronicle their families' histories and/or personal immigration journeys by drawing (using the washable fabric markers) and then using the embroidery hoops, needles, and colorful embroidery floss to embroider critical experiences, individuals, and life events on a square of fabric, similar to the one in the photo, thereby creating personal story cloths. My hope is that this will help to instill a sense of pride in my students. Thank you in advance for helping to make this possible!
