History can be an intimidating subject that frightens many from studying it. When studied in depth, history provides not only insights into society, but into ourselves as we learn from the mistakes of the past. This is best done by studying the experience of the individual juxtaposed by the political and economic settings of the past.
Historical Fiction provides a more accessible way for students to approach history and their relationship to it. Although not every aspect of a historical fiction novel is completely factual, it can excite a reader to want to know more and seek out the facts for themselves.
The young adult novel, Code Name Verity, by Elizabeth Wein, is an exciting insight into the less well-known role of women as spies and pilots during World War II. Students will be able to explore history in a way that they may have never considered when just reading a textbook.
Throughout this unit, students will learn effective research skills that will be used to write informational and argumentative pieces based on how the novel and their own research paints the picture of how the role of women in society changed during World War II.
