Everyone loves playing games and most students are pretty competitive. I want to give my students the opportunity to be engaged and learn language. In my classroom, there is no room for text books or workbooks or spelling quizzes. We use authentic videos, readings, commercials, menus, news, etc. The language classroom is starting to evolve from a traditional book based classroom to a proficiency and performance based environment of learning. For example, if a student went to Spain they need to be able to ask directions, buy clothes, order food, shop in a grocery store. We use assessments like this to practice in classroom. Playing games allows students take their language skills and vocabulary and put it into a game or station and make their learning engaging to everyone, including themselves. My project is to have Spanish board games that will allow my students to have fun in language and let help them stay in target language, maybe without even realizing they are because they are engaged. The materials can also be used in stations with verb conjugations, dice games, and conversation practice. For example, when playing Jenga the students have to answer a question written on the sticks before they can pull it out and move it to the top. Loteria is an authentic Mexican version of bingo which will help bring more culture to the room. The erasable cubes can be used for writing stories with pictures drawn on them or vocabulary for the unit.
