In drama class, we learn a lot about our emotions and the emotions of others. Often, we learn to act by imagining what it must feel like to be in someone else's circumstances. Many contemporary theater pieces, such as Hamilton and Six, show us that we can make history alive by creating theater out of historical circumstances. My students will use these books to write monologues from the perspective of a famous modern or historic black figure. These books will allow them to find someone from black history with whom they identify. After researching their chosen figure, they will write monologues from this person's perspective and perform them for classmates, family, and friends. This activity will allow these students to bring these historic figures to life and create a deeper understanding of what it was like to walk a mile in their shoes.
