As students of a Title I school in an urban setting, my students face a variety of issues including economic, social and familial challenges. Many will leave high school and directly enter the work force, others will go to a trade school, and some will enter a community or traditional college. Regardless of where they go, my goal is to make them into lifelong readers and learners and compassionate beings. Books can be like mirrors in that they reflect one's life and surroundings, but they can also expose us to other people, cultures, and populations. Books, and the characters within them, enable us to connect with one another, to understand what makes us different, but also expose to us what we all have in common. Books build connections and bridges. The books I am requesting were chosen in consultation with the English department and will be used as class sets which will allow us to read them together, have class discussions and reflect on a variety of subjects. I am truly looking forward to handing out these books to the students and collaborating with the English teachers to bring these two incredible books and their subjects into the classroom!
