In a place that does not have a Social Studies curriculum, very little emphasis is placed on learning Social Studies and students lack basic geography skills. I want to set my students up for success by having the basics. All the items listed will help effectively run learning stations to make Social Studies engaging and effective.
For example, students can use the art supplies (like scissors and glue) to recreate and model historic events. This is also to make information more appealing to my students who are visual and getting some movement in for students who are kinesthetic.
White boards and dry erase markers will be used in a multitude of ways. It will be used to conduct formative assessments, capturing individual students responses, and when students are in small groups they can brainstorm before making definitive decisions.
Maps will be used at Geography stations. The purpose is for students to learn about basic geographical features, to be able to look at a geographic map and to be able to locate continents and countries based on coordinates, and students will be able to synthesize readings and visuals to understand the world around us. What I mean by understanding the world around us is understanding how geographical location affects culture, government, and history.
Lastly Notebooks and pencils will be to record and keep track of all the information they find. This gives them a reference to be used in projects.
