My classroom is set up as a STEM learning environment with tall tables and stools. Students sit in groups of four and work together to solve problems in all core curriculum subjects. It is an effective way to teach children and I love the set up. However the stools have a wooden seat and are backless. Although the current stools fulfill their purpose it is hard for students to sit without backs on their chairs all day. The new stools will provide a backrest so that the students can stay engaged in the learning process longer and be comfortable. I have noticed over the past three years that students stand a lot. When I ask them why they are standing they tell me it is too hard to sit on the stools the whole time. If they had backrest they wouldn't need to stand. I know that when we are uncomfortable we tend to not pay attention or work as hard as we could. The new stools will provide a cushioned seat and a backrest so students can focus on their projects and experiments.
