I teach French to over 400 students each week to students in the 1st through 6th grades in a high-need urban area. English is a second language for many of our students, who might speak Vietnamese, Haitian or Cape Verdean Creole, Spanish or Portuguese at home. Introducing a "new" language at school creates a common entry point into a learning community where language study is encouraged, promoted and valued. Sequential language study is most effective in the early grades, supporting and enriching students' acquisition of English as well as encouraging the continued development of their "heritage" languages. Language "sharing" and cultural comparisons are highly encouraged! Just as you don't have to BE French to speak French, you don't have to BE Vietnamese (or Mexican, or Haitian...) in order to learn a little something about those cultures from your peers.
