These materials will make a huge difference for all of my students in their introduction to and exploration of yoga this semester. Students are coming to our high school with all different body types and levels of strength and flexibility, so these props are necessary to support every individual and make sure they are safe and adjusting postures to meet their individual needs. Yoga mats are an obvious need for students to be able to practice on a cushioned yet sticky surface to prevent slipping and other injuries. The yoga blocks are wonderful tools to support students who are less flexible because they may not have much experience with stretching their bodies. For example, if a student isn't able to bend forward and touch the floor, they might feel embarrassed or discouraged. If they are offered a block to place their hands on, then they know they have tools to modify poses so that they are supporting their bodies where they are, instead of pushing past their level of comfort to a place where they might strain and injure themselves. The same goes for straps and blankets. Blankets are often used to sit on top of when learning meditation techniques, to place under the knees if you are experiencing lower back pain, or even just to cover the body to support overall relaxation and a feeling of safety and comfort. Without these props, practicing yoga can be unsafe and uncomfortable for people who have very different body types, injuries, and levels of experience. I want to make sure everyone in my yoga classroom feels supported and excited to explore this healing practice that can impact their academic success and sense of overall wellness.
