Our school is located in the middle of the Bering Sea in the Alaskan bush. We are always looking west into the future, where the dateline is only 10 miles away! We can also see Russia on a clear day. The only way on and off the island is by small bush plane, or boat in the summer. Our school is 100% free lunch and breakfast. Many of our students participate in subsistence hunting, fishing and gathering. The Alaskan natives are St. Lawrence Island Yupik, and the majority of our students are bilingual. Your donation will help active 5 year olds succeed in kindergarten by staying hydrated and active with alternative seating. As we live in the middle of the Bering Sea and getting outside to play in the winter is difficult, if not impossible due to the snow and wind. Having alternative seating such as balance balls and chairs will help my students be able to get out their wiggles! We also live in an area that the water needs to be filtered. There is only one sink with filtered water in the cafeteria. Having our own water bottles, filter, extra pitchers, and fridge in our classroom will help keep the students hydrated through out the day.
