Social and emotional skills are more necessary than ever before, especially for my students with developmental disabilities. My students have communication delays which limit their abilities to lead an independent life beyond school. Students will need social communication to hold a job, sustain friendships and interact with caregivers. Read aloud picture books are a great tool for creating visual images of the social and emotional skills I teach my students. My students respond positively to the illustrations and text. Picture books also encourage the use of alternative communication systems and the use of core words. By funding this project, we can build a library of books for social and emotional learning.
