Hearing a book read on tape helps Kindergartener's see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also give an important introduction to listening — a skill that they must master in order to learn to read. The benefits of having a listening center, CD player, and Read-Along books in the classroom are endless. As more and more of my students are English Language Learners, my kindergartener's need to build their listening comprehension skills in order to be able to understand, converse in, and read English successfully. A listening center will reinforce and allow my students to practice the phonics and comprehension skills that I teach them.
