My students love to read, but are usually required to read books that do not relate to their past, their present, and their possible futures. This memoir by Jeanette Wells will allow my students to continue their love of reading, but be able to have empathy for the characters as they understand that these characters are very similar to themselves. Reading in high school is not just about comprehension, but also how the author uses diction, imagery, and emotional appeals to bring you into their world. The students reading the memoir The Glass Castle will rhetorically analyze Jeannette Wells' writing for its creative, descriptive, honest, and real tone that mature young adults need to hear. The students will keep a reading/writing journal as they read the memoir and will participate in class discussion about each chapter. This will allow each student an opportunity to have their own voice while participating in an intellectual and academic environment. This memoir will be just one of the novels that the students will read and discuss throughout the year.
