As I stated above, many of our students are either English language learners or have external factors making reading a difficulty. Our eighth grade team wants to introduce the graphic novel, Persepolis, as our first novel study of the year. Not only will the students be able to connect with the diverse character and circumstances in the story, they will also be able to use the illustrations to help them develop context and understanding. This will enable students at all reading levels to engage in the text and feel confident as readers. When students feel like they can comprehend and relate to the text, they are more likely to want to read. Providing our eighth graders with these novels to kick off the school year will help spark a thirst for reading that will establish the tone and learning environment for the rest of the year!
