Literacy is the most fundamental skill any student will take away from school at every level. Our complicated world is flooded with complicated text, from Facebook posts to the Washington Post, educational apps to college applications, students need to be comfortable and confident in their ability to consume and analyze complex text. The central goal in our classroom is to develop that confidence by learning and practicing the literacy skills embedded in the Common Core State Standards. My students inspire me on a daily basis to do whatever I can to help level the playing field for them, as they need to work harder to see the same outcomes as their peers studying in more affluent districts. Through strong relationships with students and their families, rigorous, standards-aligned lessons, and the generous help of outside donors, I hope to continue to enable students to become their best selves through literacy.
