At DIA, students enter our bi-lingual program in kindergarten and by the time they graduate from 8th grade they are able to read, write and speak fluently in both English and Spanish. Our curriculum is challenging because we must prepare our students to be ready for future opportunities and responsibilities, opportunities like college admission and scholarships. Responsibilities like preparing to be the leaders of this amazing and changing country. My 5th grade students will study "Esperanza Rising" in both English and Spanish. They will be expected to demonstrate comprehension, discuss important themes, and write a 5-paragraph essay in BOTH languages. Many of my students are first-generation American citizens and they relate very personally to this story of Esperanza who must dig deeply within herself to find the courage and strength to start over!
