This year I implemented a few calming elements into my 5th grade RLA's classroom and the results have been amazing! Students began to relax and comment that they felt peaceful even with the stress that assessments, workload, etc. typically bring in 5th grade. Our classroom is set up in a non-traditional design with the desks in a "U" shape for gathering, alternative lighting, waterfall fountain for sound, some relaxed seating options, and calming oils diffusing. However, with a large class size of 31, I would like to better accomodate every student with comfortable seating. Currently our alternative seating consists of a few stability balls, bean bag chairs and yoga mats for the children to choose from. Although it is a good start, it is simply not enough to meet the needs of every student at a time. Through DonorsChoose we are seeking out 7 Stability Balls for our Computer area, 1 Stability Ball for our "Zen Zone", 31 Seat Cushions for desk chairs, 2 floor Bolster Pillows for our "Stretch Out and Read" area and 1 Bunjo chair for the V.I.P. area.
