Every morning I read a picture book to my students. My students thrive on our daily read aloud--it helps us build our literacy skills, especially as we are beginning readers. These texts also help us address our social emotional skills and gives us strong, collective experiences. These picture books will give my students an outlet for their imaginations, feelings and satisfy our need for normalcy. The 2021-2022 school year has been eventful and challenging. My students have experienced so much and, yet, every day they show me how resilient they are. There are so many amazing books in this project, such as "Jabari Tries," "A Kids Book About Racism" and "The Year We Learned to Fly" (a book I am particularly excited for). I have also included shatter-proof mirrors, so that my first graders can see and feel how different sounds are produced. These are books that we need in our classroom. Students will be able to see themselves represented and put themselves in other's shoes as they listen to these books. My students will be inspired, engaged and positively impacted.
